I’m writing a book! And you can get involved!
The aim of the book is to explore the lived experience of being a female into punk music. Any era of punk and any sub-genre is included- whether it was the originally 1970s cohort of British bands; the American Hardcore scene of the 80s or 90s pop-punk, it doesn’t matter! Whether you were in a band; going to gigs or listening to songs in your room- I want to hear from you!
The main bulk of the book will trace key events in the wider women’s and social movement(s) of the time and look at how punk reacted to that. Did women find empowerment and support in the punk movement? Was it easy to find punk songs/bands that addressed key issues such as: violence against women; poverty; women’s health issues; the experiences of women of colour/trans women/disabled women? Does it really matter? You tell me!
The book is currently a labour of love- it is a project that I’ve been working on for a while and 2020 is the year I want to finish it! I do not currently have a publisher- I am working on this book freelance and in my own time but my aim is to get it published.
